Help Wanted: Santa Clauses required!

on 8 July, 2013

Ok. So. You all have been following along as we try to re-stock Holy Spirit Academy, a High River elementary school, wiped out by flooding. The response as been amazing, and if you haven’t taken advantage of one of the MANY ways you can help those teachers to replenish their classroms, go ahead and do it now. I’ll wait.

You’re back? Excellent. Because there’s more, and IT IS EVEN MORE FUN THAN BUYING BOOKS AND TOYS!!! (Hard to believe, but true, I promise.)

Now, hang on while I take a breath because this is so exciting I am having trouble typien. tyings. typeing. toing. TYPING, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

This is how I teach kindergarten to do deep breathing: Smell the flowers. Blow out the candle:

Smell the flower…

Blow out the candle…

We’re all breathing, now? Ok. Let’s carry on:

In addition to restocking the classrooms with the things teachers need to teach the children, reader Margaret had a BRILLIANT idea: let’s send presents to the teachers, FOR THE TEACHERS. Here’s how it works:

Sign up using the link below. Once you sign up, you will get an e-mail with the first name, grade level, and gender of a teacher at Holy Spirit Academy. Once you have that information, your mission is to fill a shoebox (nothing bigger, please) with the kinds of things we all keep in our desks/cupboards/cubbies/drawers/cabinets to keep ourselves sane, day in and day out.

Things to include:

  • All the things that keep us all chugging along through the daily chaos:  funny post-its, emergency chocolate, gourmet lip balm, extra-strength advil, fancy highlighters. You know the stuff I mean.
  • A postcard or special souvenir from your town or region, telling your giftee where you are from.
  •  A personal note of love and encouragement. You can include your name and contact info, or choose to remain anonymous.
  • Completely optional: Holy Spirit is a Catholic school, so if you wanted to include a prayer card, blessing, or other small religious token, it would be most welcome.

(Hang on, I need to smell the flowers and blow out the candles for a minute…. My eyes also have a little bit of wet in them, it seems…)

Ok if you are ready to sign up, the form is below. Please understand: once you complete the form, you are committed to fill your box and mail it to Susanne by August 15th. Susanne and her principal have provided me with a complete list of teachers, and it is very important that no one gets left out, so please consider this a cross-your-heart-and-hope-to-die sort of promise, okay?

OK! Let’s go!

(Final note: if, by some amazing miracle, we have more gifters than giftees, I will FIND ANOTHER SCHOOL THAT NEEDS US!)

**Update, July 10: The miracle has happened, and we have more than enough volunteers to cover all of the teachers and staff at Holy Spirit. If I can get enough volunteers to cover another school affected by flooding, I will happily continue this project, so please do not hesitate to sign up! If you know of another school community who would be an appropriate recipient for a project like this, please contact me.
